Western LNG Terminal Associates is pushing the Point Conception, Calif., site for a terminal to import Indonesian LNG and told California authorities in mid-Apr. 1978, that the site can be completed 2-5 yr sooner than four other sites being considered. According to Western LNG, the Point Conception site will affect the environment less than other sites considered, since it is the farthest from state beaches, highways, etc.; has a natural breakwater; and is the only site not requiring offsite disposal of soil for site preparation. The California Coastal Commission is conducting hearings on the siting issue under the state's 1977 LNG Terminal Act; a final site selection must be made by 7/31/78. Many citizens of Santa Barbara County protested the Point Conception site at a local hearing.
