Members of Congress, representatives from the National Wildlife Federation and other wetlands and environmental groups were among those testifying before the Subcommittee on Environmental Protection on reauthorization of the Clean Water Act. This legislation protects wetlands and other waters from the effects of filling. This hearing was held in an attempt to see that the physical, chemical and biological integrity of the nation's waters is maintained. The most important aquatic environments are wetlands because they remove nutrients, process wastes, reduce sediment, store flood waters, maintain groundwater recharge and water table level. In addition, wetlands sustain most of the fisheries and these aquatic habitats support over one-third of all threatened and endangered species in the United States.
