A complete analysis is provided, primarily directed towards builders, on incorporating the latest advances in passive solar heating and energy conservation in the design of single-family residences. Also considered are materials, construction techniques, siting, and theory necessary for the planning and construction of solar homes. Topics include passive solar heating options, sun-tempering, glazing, thermal storage, sunspaces, attached greenhouses, insulation (moveable and fixed), earth sheltering, domestic hot water (solar), effects of climate, solar cooling, and others. A step-by-step approach is used. In addition, an analysis is given to show how five builders made the transition to solar construction using specific case studies.
