Builders guide to energy conservation

Book ·
OSTI ID:7353489
The purpose of this manual is to provide information to home builders on the relative effectiveness of alternate energy conservation methods. The impact of the energy shortages and price increases on the marketing of new homes is discussed. In considering the design of the house, the builder should examine the building site, orientation, glazing, insulation, shading devices, effects of building mass on energy consumption, lighting, and heating/air conditioning systems. Materials selection, which has a significant effect on the amount of energy consumed, is discussed for doors, windows, insulation, appliances, and heating/air conditioning equipment. Good construction techniques (e.g., in installing insulation, reducing air infiltration, and weatherstripping) are described in order to insure that the design methods used to conserve energy are effective. Solar energy and land use planning are considered as long-range solutions to the energy problem. Appendixes include the following: Methods of Energy Conservation for the Home Owner; Heat Loss and Heating Cost Calculations; and Heat Loss and Gain Calculations. (24 references) (BYB)
