A optically pumped CO/sub 2/ laser, which is excited by a 100-mJ HBr laser, produces 1 mJ of multiline energy per pulse. Extensive stepwise tuning is accomplished by means of an intracavity grating and by using various isotopic forms of CO/sub 2/. A technique which enables measurement of the CO/sub 2/ (01/sup 1/0) relaxation time by HBr is described.
