A potentially useful 16-$mu$m CO$sub 2$ laser, oscillating on the 10degree0,02degree0/sub II/ to 01$sup 1$0 transition, is described. The v=1$Yields$v=0 lines from an HBr chemical laser were used to pump a low-pressure mixture of HBr and CO$sub 2$ gases. Vibrational energy transfer from HBr followed by a 9.6-$mu$m stimulating pulse populated the CO$sub 2$ 10degree0,02degree0/sub II/ level. (AIP)
