Energy characteristics of a 16. mu. CO/sub 2/ laser pumped optically in the 4. 3 and 9. 6. mu. bands

Journal Article · · Sov. J. Quant. Electron. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)

Results are presented of a theoretical investigation of the energy characteristics of a CO/sub 2/ molecular laser emitting in the 02/sup 0/0--01/sup 1/0 channel (16 ..mu..). It is postulated that the system is pumped by radiation from pulsed HBr and CO/sub 2/ lasers in the 4.3 and 9.6 ..mu.. bands, respectively. The optimal parameters of the laser are determined. It is shown that at pump energies of approx.0.02 J/cm/sup 2/, resonator lengths of approx.100 cm, loss coefficients of approx.0.01 cm/sup -1/, and optimal values of the pump pulse duration, pressure, and CO/sub 2/--He mixture composition, the efficiency of conversion of the 4.3 ..mu.. pump radiation energy into 16 ..mu.. stimulated emission energy attains approx.4.5%.
