EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS FOR ACUTE WHOLE-BODY IRRADIATION OF DOGS WITH COBALT 60

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4843075
Forty healthy, mature mongrel dogs of both sexes weighing 6.0 to 11.0 kg were exposed to whole-body doses of cobalt 60 irradiation at midline tissue doses of 250 r and 500 r (27 to 32 r/min). The dogs were irradiated in either a single cage or a dual cage, the latter permitting the simultaneous irradiation of paired experimental dogs. Clinical examination and blood determinations of hema tocrit, hemoglobin, total leakocyte, and differential count were obtained both prior to and following irradiation. Total leakocyte counts fell rapidly in all dogs. Hematocrit and hemoglobin levels decreased following irradiation. Recovery of the blood picture occurred in the dogs which eventually survived. Death of dogs when it occurred, fell between the eighth and twenty-sixth post-irradiation days. The mean survival time decreased as radiation dose was increased. The LD/sub 50// /sub 3da//sub ys/ for dogs irradiated in the single cage was estimated at 260 r and the LD/sub 100//sub /30//sub d/ >i/sub ays/ at 325 r. Dual cage irradiation resulted in an LD/sub 50///sub 30d//sub / a>i/sub ys/ of 335 r and an LD/sub 100/ /sub /30//sub day//sub s/ of 400 r. Th e difference in lethality of approximately 75 r between dogs irradiated in the single and dual cages is attributable to the difference in positions occupied by the dogs during irradiation. (auth)
