Dogs, rabbits, and ddN strain mice were subjected to single whole-body irradiation and their peripheral blood was examined from 3 hours to 4 weeks later. The minimal dose required to induce changes in the peripheral blood was comparred with the LD/sub 50//3O days (for dogs 300, rabbits 800, and mice 700 r). It was presumed that changes occurred with a dose of 1/2 x LD/sub 50//30 days in the red cells, the hemoglobin content, and the color index, with 1/20 x LD/sub 50//3O days in reticulocytes, leucocytes, and granulocytes, with 1/100 x LD/sup 50//30 days in lymphocytes, and with 1/10 x LD/sub 50//30 days in platelets. An increase in granuiocytes with 1/20 x LD/sub 50//30 days, and the appearance of dead leucocytes with 1/20 x LD/sub 50//30 days was found in dogs, rabbits, and ddN strain mice. The minimal doses inducing minimal changes in blood cells for the animals showed relatively constant values regardless of the species of animal examined. In rabbits irradiated with 1/2 x LD/sub 50//30 days there was no variation in the hematocrit values or in the diameter of the erythrocytes, but there was an increase in the mean cell volume and thickness of erythrocytes.
