INVESTIGATION OF THE ROLE OF IONIZING RADIATION IN EXPERIMENTAL INFECTION WITH PATHOGENIC STAPHYLOCOCCI

Rabbits were irradiated with 50 r at 3- to 4-day intervals over a period of 44 days, giving a total radiation dose of 450 r. Three days after the last dose, a pathologic strain of Staphylococcus aureus was injected intravenously and the course of infection was followed in these and in infectednon-irradiated controls. The mortality by 90 days was twice as high in irradiated-infected than infected controls, whereas the irradiated-noninfected animals showed an intermediate mortality rate. The leukocytosis induced by infection was lower in irradiated animals, but agglutinin and antistaphylolysin titers were not appreciably lower in irradiated rabbits. Histopathologic changes were most marked in the irradiated-infected group and least severe in the nonirradiated- infected group, and these changes were most pronounced in intestine, spleen, and liver. Necrotizingdegenerative lesions in the central nervous system and adrenals could be attributed entirely to irradiation. (H.H.D.)
