OXIDATIVE PHOSPHORYLATION IN RATS IRRADIATED WITH Co$sup 60$ AND TREATED WITH HOMOLOGOUS HOMOGENATES OF LIVER, KIDNEY AND SPLEEN

Adult rats were irradiated with 450 r, given in 2 daily doses of 225 r, and oxidative phosphorylation was investigated in homogenates of liver removed 1 to 7 days later. Within 5 days this process was markedly diminished as shown by a decrease of P/O ratio of liver to 1.8 compared with 2.9 in control animals, as determined from O uptake of the homogenates and conversion of inorganic to organic P. On the basis of P/O values, this impairment of oxidative phosphorylation was not prevented by intraperitoneal injection of homogenates of rat liver, kidney, or spleen. Liver homogenate, or nuclear, mitochondrial, and supernatant fractions thereof, from the irradiated rats were injected into normal rats. The livers of rats injected with the supernatant fraction from irradiated rats showed impaired oxidative phosphorylation, the P/O ratio being 2.0 compared with 2.9 in control liver homogenate.
