THE SERUM PROTEIN LEVELS IN RATS IRRADIATED WITH Co$sup 60$ AND TREATED WITH HOMOLOGOUS HOMOGENATES OF SPLEEN AND LIVER
Serum proteins were studied by paper electrophoresis in rats after irradiation with 450 r, either in 2 daily doses of 225 r or in a single dose. Eight days after the single dose, total serum protein levels were unaffected but albumin fell to 1.82 g% from a control level of 2.64, alpha /sub 1/-globulin increased to 1.06 g% from 0.64, and more moderate increases of BETA - and gamma -globulin levels also occurred. These changes were less marked in rats given two 225-r doses. When homogenates of spleen and liver from rats irradiated with a single 450-r dose were injected into normal rats, serum protein levels changed in the same way as in irradiated rats but to a less marked extent. For example, after injection of homogenates of irradiated spleen, albumin fell to 2.29 g% from 2.64 and alpha /sub 1/-globulin rose to 0.88 from 0.64. Liver homogenate was slightly less effective than that of spleen. The results indicate that a factor is produced in irradiated tissue which is capable of altering serum protein levels. (H.H.D.)
