CHANGES IN SERUM PROTEINS OF RATS SUBJECTED TO SMALL DOSES OF X RAYS. II. GLYCOPROTEINS (in Italian)
As in earlier studies on total proteins (cf. preceding abstract), rats were exposed to whole-body or abdominal irradiation with low doses, 50 to 80 r given in single or four fractionated doses over 4 days. At 24 hr and 15 days after irradiation serum samples were obtained and treated with 95% ethanol, the glycoproteins remaining in the supernatant after the precipitation of proteins. Glycoproteins were estimated on the basis of their hexose content by the anthrone reaction, glucosamine content by Ehrlich's reagent, and sialic acid content by the Bial reaction. Carbohydrate content of various serum fractions separated by electrophoresis on paper was determined by the periodic acid-Schiff reaction. Irradiation of the liver region with 50 or 80 r did not significantly alter serum glycoprotein levels. Panirradiation with the same doses did elevate total serum glycoproteins as determined chemically on the 15th day and increased the carbohydrate content of albumin, alpha /sub 1/globulin, and alpha /sub 2/- globulin, while that of gamma -globulin decreased. These changes were interpreted as reflecting a nonspecific stress reaction since they can be simulated by injection of ACTH or adrenal steroids. (BBB)
