CHANGES IN SERUM PROTEINS OF RATS SUBJECTED TO SMALL DOSES OF X RAYS. I. TOTAL PROTEINS (in Italian)
Serum protein levels were followed by paper electrophoresis in rats exposed to 180-kv x rays either over the whole body or in the liver region. The doses in each instance were 50 to 80 r, and in some rats the same total doses were given as four daily exposures on consecutive days. The serums were examined at 10 and 24 hr and 15 days postirradiation. Focal doses of 50 r did not significantly alter the levels of total proteins or any of the fractions, whereas 80 r to the liver caused a slight increase in gamma -globulins which was not reflected by a rise in total serum proteins. This change was noted only on the 15th day and was also seen at this time in rats exposed to wholebody, 50- and 80- r doses. Total proteins rose slightly after 50-r, but not 80-r, panirradiation. Slight decrements in albumin and increments in alpha /sub 2/-globulins were inconsistently present. The most significant change, the late elevation of gamma -globulins was attributed to the hyperplasia of lymphoid tissue following its earlier destruction by radiation. The other changes appear to result from a stress reaction and activation of the hypophysealadrenal system, since similar changes can be elicited by injection of ACTH. (BBB)
