CHANGES IN SERUM PROTEINS OF RATS SUBJECTED TO SMALL DOSES OF X RAYS. III. LIPOPROTEINS (ELECTROPHORETIC STUDY) (in Italian)
Paper electrophoresis combined with Sudan black staining was used to follow changes in serum lipoprotein fractions 1 and 15 days after abdominal or whole-body irradiation of rats. Single or four divided doses were given to a total of 50 or 80 r. No significant changes in the fractions were noted after 50- or 80-r abdominal irradiation in single or fractionated doses or after 50- or 80- r single wholebody doses. However, after 80-r, whole-body fractionated doses a 100% increase in BETA /sub 3/-lipoprotein and slight decreases in alpha - and BETA /sub 1/-lipoproteins were noted 1 day postirradiation. Normal levels of these fractions were regained by the 15th day. The BETA / alpha lipoprotein ratio was elevated 2-fold in these animals after 1 day but returned to normal by the 15th day. The BETA /sub 3/-lipoprotein fraction found here to be most influenced by irradiation corresponds to the lipoproteins with flotation constant (S/sub f/ class) 0-100 as determined by ultracentriiugation. It is postulated that these changes in serum lipoproteins may be related to the rise in plasma heparinoids which has been noted to follow irradiation of various animal species. (BBB)
