STUDY OF THE CHANGES IN LYMPHOCYTE POLYSACCHARIDES AND SERUM GLYCOPROTEINS IN GUINEA PIGS SUBJECTED TO TOTAL-BODY IRRADIATION IN SUBLETHAL DOSES
Radiation effects on lymphocyte polysaccharides and serum glycoproteins were investigated in guinea pigs. The animals were given a single, whole-body 500-r dose of 180-kv x irradiation and humoral changes were examined before, immediately after, and 10, 20, and 30 days after irradiation. The number of circulating lymphocytes fell to 10 to 15% of the initial value by the 10th day and reached a very low level by the 30th day. Lymphocyte polysaccharide content fell after irradiation, the lowest value being reached on the 10th day. Changes in serum glycoproteins were most marked on the 10th day: increases were noted in these components in the albumin (16.6%) and alpha /sub 1/-globulin (25.3%) fractions and decreases in alpha /sub 2-/ (27.9%), BETA - (9.2%), and gamma - globulin (4.8%) fractions. The levels returned to normal by the 3Oth day. This shows that the alpha -glycoproteins are markedly altered by irradiation. The more pronounced glycoprotein changes in guinea pigs as compared with irradiated humans may reflect the higher acute doses used in the animals; moreover, the higher doses might be expected to produce more injury to the lymphocytes than the fractionated doses in humans.
