RADIATION-INDUCED GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION TO POLYVINYL ALCOHOL. VII. THERMAL GRAFTING OF STYRENE TO PRE-IRRADIATED POLYVINYL ALCOHOL FILMS
In most cases, no grafting occurred when a styrene solution was used for grafting without the addition of water. When a methanol solution of styrene was used for grafting, grafting occurred smoothly at a higher temperature than 40 deg C without the addition of water. Methanol was the most effective solvent for the grafting. Oxygen in air had a strong inhibiting or retarding effect on graft copolymerization. A temperature higher than 80 deg C had to be used for grafting in the presence of air. Graft copolymerization was carried out in vacuo. The optimum temperature of grafting was 50 deg C. The initial rate of grafting was higher at higher temperatures, but the amount of grafting after 24 hr was highest at about 50 deg C. The behavior oi airirradiated PVA films subjected to graft copolymerization was quite similar to that for films irradiated in a vacuum. The films were brought in contact with air for 3 hr at room temperature after vacuum irradiation, and then subjected to graft copolymerization at 50 deg C for 24 hr. The trapped radicals which were stable in air at room temperature played a most important role in grafting in both cases. The effect of the dose rate on the rate of grafting was small, not only for vacuum irradiation, but also for air irradiation. (OID)
