Test results obtained from PVA film samples (0.2 mm thick, 2 x 0.5 cm/ sup 2/) in methanol, propanol, CCl/sub 4/, acetone, and benzene irradiated by a 1000-C Co/sup 60/ source at the rate of 1.1 x 10/sup 4/ r/hr and in ethanol at 9 x 10/sup 3/ r/hr up to total dosage of 2.5 x 10/sup 5/ r at 30 deg C were tabulated and are discussed. Except in the case with methanol at a higher concentration, little or no accelerating effect on the grafting of styrene to PVA film was observed. This could be attributed by the important role of gel effect played in homopolymerization at a higher solvent concentration. In the case of CCl/sub 4/, the highest accelerating effect on the homopolymerization but low grafting rate were observed. The phenomenon was due to the transfer of grafting chains to the solvent molecules. The solvent with a low chain power is a favorable factor in grafting. (OID)
