GAMMA-RAY-INDUCED GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION. IV. GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION OF METHACRYLIC ACID TO POLYETHYLENE BY THE MUTUAL GRAFT TECHNIQUE
Samples were prepared by irradiating a polyethylene (PE) film immersed in a methanol solution of methacrylic acid, at 25 plus or minus 1 deg C with Co/ sup 60/ gamma -rays from a 300 or 3000-c source facility. Photomicrographs of cross sections showed that initial grafting occurred predominately at the surface. The grafted layer served as a matrix for further grafting. An analysis of the products (the monomer concentration, dosage rate, and film thickness were 0.75 mol/l, 7.4 x 10/sup 4/ r/hr, and 0.07 mm, respectively). The grafted PE weight plotted against time increased almost linearly. The effects of factors, such as film thickness (0.03, 0.05, or 0.07 mm), monomer concentration (0.25 to 2.5 mol/ l), dosage rate (1.4 X 10/sup 4/ approximates 5.5 x 10/sup 5/ r/hr), amount of solvent, and the initial grafting rate on graft copolymerization are discussed briefly. It was observed that the amount of polymethacrylic acid grafted in benzene- methanol was greater than that in methanol. The grafted methacrylic acid increased with the electric surface resistance of the PE film. (OID)
