The grafting of MMA to pre-irradiated PVA films (Co/sup 60/ gamma rays at 0.15 Mr/hr) with the addition of a small amount of iron salts to a solution of the monomer, acetone, and water (14:56:30) with a graft efficiency of 98% at 22 deg C was observed. Ferrous ions were more effective than ferric ions. Experimental data showed that the optimum conditions for grafting were: a ferrous ion concentration in the solution of 1.0 x 10/sup -4/ mol/l: a pH of 3.5 (no grafting occurred in alkaline solutions); and temperatures between 20 approximates 30 deg C. The addition of other reducing agents to the iron redox system only decreased the rate of grafting. (OID)
