The samples prepared by irradiating dry PVA films between 0.066 to 0.149 mm were irradiated first in air at 0.2 to 0.13 Mr/hr up to 46 to g.1 Mr, respectively, with gamma rays at temperatures between 12 to 20 deg C, immersed in various mixtures of monomer solutions, and evacuated to a pressure less than 10/sup -4/ mm Hg. Graft copolymerization was observed when the samples were heated between 30 to 80 deg C for 22 to 24 hr. The grafting efficiency was 97% at 40 deg C but decreased to 64% at 80 deg C. It was concluded that active centers of PVA films were responsible for diperoxides as well as the hydroperoxides and trapped radicals. Grafting appeared only in the presence of water. (OID)
