RADIATION-INDUCED GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION TO POLYVINYL ALCOHOL. VIII. THE GRAFTING OF STYRENE TO PRE-IRRADIATED POLYVINYL ALCOHOL FILMS IN THE PRESENCE OF FERROUS IONS
The grafting of styrene in the air or in a vacuum to preirradiated polyvinyl alcohol films was carried out in the presence of ferrous ions at different temperatures. Although the effect of ferrous ions on the rate of graft copolymeri-zation was not so significant as in the case of grafting of methyl methacrylate, ferrous ions had a favorable effect on graft copolymerization in the air at lower temperatures. Grafting occurred only slightly when graft copolymerization was carried out under 80 deg C in air in the absence of ferrous ions, but it occurred smoothly in the presence of ferrous ions. The behavior of vacuum-irradiated PVA films subjected to graft copolymerization was similar to that of air-irradiated PVA films. (OID)
