Title: PROGRESS REPORT ON PROCESSING URANIUM ORES , JANUARY 16, 1952-MARCH 15, 1952

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4837772

Analytical development and production results of laboratory and field work on problems connected with U ore processing and concentration are reviewed. Froth-flotation test work on Congo ores yielded results of interest. Field test work with an ion-exchange column pilot plant gave encouraging results with respect to recovery and grade of product. Continued work is reported on the proper flowsheet for V recovery from U ores. Ion-exchange tests on U leach liquors were satisfactory. Flowsheets and cost estimates for Mn recovery from Rand barren leach liquors were completed. Filtration rate studies on leached pulps derived from samples from the Rand district are reported. The effect of polythionates and Co on U adsorption of Rand acid leach liquors was studied. The technique of using batch adsorption and column elution for evaluating the life of a resin was investigated. A small pilot plant unit for resin-in-pulp operation in which baskets made of stainless steel screen were used to hold the resin beads while pulp is passed through the apparatus was constructed and tried out. Evaluation work on a number of samples of new resin types was started. Test work on the effect of KMn04 in Na carbonate leaching and on the U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ extraction from U ores is reported. Lyometallurgical tests and liquid-liquid extraction tests on nitric acid leach liquors from Radium Hill ores using both hexone and ether are reported. (auth)
