Winter wheat seeds (Triticum vulgare) were given a dose of 10 to 100 kiloroentgens (kr) of Co/sup 60/ radiation in the presence of air and in the absence of air. The irradiated seeds were treated with a 0.5 to 10% aqueous solution of vinylpyrrolidone (VP) for 2 to 24 hours at temperatures of 30, 50, and 70 deg C. Experiments were also run on unirradiated seeds with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Maximum grafting as a result of the radiation after- effect was ob tained by treating the seed in the absence of air with a 5% solution of VP after an irradiation dose of 40 kr. Grafting of PVP on unirradiated seeds also occurred. The viability of untreated seeds decreased from 80% for a 10 kr dose to 42% for a 100 kr dose. The viability of seeds treated with PVP was 87% for a I0 kr dose, and 60% for a 100 kr dose. Thus, these initial experiments show that grafting has a protective effect. The rate of growth of the shoot from irradiated seeds is at a maximum for seeds treated with a 5% VP solution for 4 hours. Cytological studies on cells of the root system of irradiated seeds treated with VP also show that the grafted polymer has a protective effect on the irradiated seeds. (TTT)
