RADIATION GRAFTING OF POLYMERS ON BIOLOGICAL OBJECTS

The study was conducted with winter wheat (Triticum vulgare seeds and vinylprrolidone (VP). It was shown that treatment of the seeds wlth aqueous VP solutions results in the grafting of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) on the seeds. With preliminary gamma -ray treatment of the seeds, the degree of graftlng lnireased from 0.2--12.2 to 0.2-21.8cu of the seed weight. Study of the effects of the radiation dose (10--100 k-roentgen), concentration of the solution (0.5-- 10%), duration of the VP treatment (2--24 hrs). temperature 130, 50, and 70 deg C), and the presence or absence of air oxygen on the degree of grafting permitted the establishment of optimum grafting conditions for irradiated and nonirradiated seeds in the presence or absence of oxygen, The courses of the radiation initiation reactions are believed to be radical in nature; in the presence of oxygen the process consists in the destruition of peroxide compounds formed as a result of radiation. The effect of PVP grafting on biological functions was studied on both irradiated and nonirradiated seeds. The seeds were treated with aqueous VP solutions at 30 deg C in the presence of oxygen under various conditions. Study of the seeds degree of survival, the growth of the coleoptiles.
