Diploid yeast cells of Saccharomyces vini of the strain Megri-139-B were irradiated in air with Co/sup 60/ gamma rays in an aqueous suspension of 7 x 10/ sup 5/ cells/ml. The survival of the yeast cells was determined as a function of vinylpyrrolidone (VP), irradiation dose, and treatment time with VP before and after irradiation. At a dose of 37.5 kiloroentgens, a concentration of 2% VP was found to be optimum. Treatment of the yeast cells with 2% VP before irradiation was more effective in increasing the survival of yeast cells than treatment with 2% VP after irradiation. Yeast cells irradiated in water make a faster recovery from a 2% VP soliltion than from water alone. (TTT)
