THE EFFECT OF ANTIBIOTICS ON THE RADIATION DAMAGE TO YEAST (in Russian)
Diploid yeast cells of Saccharomrces vini of the Megri 139 B strain were grown at 30 deg C on a solid wort-agar medium. After 48 hours, 0.1 ml of a 10/ sup -4/M solution of antibiotic was added to the yeast culture which was then subjected to a gamma dose of 80 kr from a Co/sup 60/ source. The irradiations were carried out in air, in vacuum, and in oxygen (300 mm Hg std). The survival of the irradiated cells was used as a measure of the radioprotective effect of the antibiotic. All the antibiotics (gramicidin, penicillin, fumagillin, aureomycin, aurantine, and streptomycin) showed a radioprotective effect on irradiating the yeast cells in air and in oxygen. Fumagillin and gramicidin showed a pronounced radioprotective effect on irradiation in a vacuum, but streptomycin and aurantine showed no protective effect under these conditions. The antibiotic showed no radioprotective effect, when it was added to the yeast cells 5 minutes after the irradiation. It was shown that the bactericidal properties of the antibiotic are not associated with its radioprotective properties by comparing the anti-bacterial activity of an aureomycin preparation with its radioprotective properties on storage of the aureomycin over a period of 50 days. The anti-bacterial activity decreased with time, but the radioprotective properties of the aureomycin remained constant with time. Potentiometric measurements of the redox potential of a suspension of yeast cells before and after addition of the antibiotic to the solution showed that addition of the antibiotic lowers the redox potential of the suspension. The greater the decrease in redox potential, the more effective was the antibiotic. (TTT)
