Since experiments with white mice are lengthy and costly, the suitability of yeast cells Saccharomyces vini of the strain Megri 139B was investigated as a substitute for white mice in evaluating the radioprotective properties of 47 chemical compounds containing various combinations of amino and sulfur groups. An aqueous suspension of yeast cells was added to the solution of the chemical compound to give about 1.5 x 10/sup 5/ cells per ml. The yeast cells were subjected to x-ray doses of 30, 45, and 60 kr. The survival of LD/sub 50/ dose was obtained, and the results were compared with those obtained from experiments on white mice. A total of 15 out of 47 compounds showed protective properties in the yeast experiments, and 13 of these 15 compounds were also effective in protecting white mice. It is concluded that microorganisms, especially yeast cells, are a suitable means of screening chemical compounds for radioprotective properties. The disadvantage of the method is that only water- soluble compounds can be tested with yeast cells. (TTT)
