A method for producing a fuel element comprising a plurality of cylindrical fuel rods housed in a sheath is given which results in improved mechanical strength for a given sheath thickness. The method comprises forming a series of fuel rods in which the external diameter of alternate rods is greater than that of the other rods, enveloping the series of rods in a sheath, and deforming the sheath to hold each rod relative to its adjacent rods. The resultant longitudinal buckling of the sheath stiffens the fuel element. (D.L.C.)
