A method for making sheathed reactor fuel elements is given which results in greater strength for a given sheath thickness. The method comprises stacking a series of fuel rods in which the diameter of alternate rods is greater than that of the other rods, enveloping the series of rods in a sheath, and deforming the sheath to hold each rod relative to its adjacent rods. Longitudinal folds are also formed which stiffen the element. (D.L.C.)
