PROCESS OF TREATING CARBON ARTICLES

A process is outlined for treating a porous carbon article to render it substantially impermeable. The process comprises heating the article in a moving stream of a gaseous carbon compound at a steady temperature in the range 500 to 1500 deg C to cause pyrolytic deposition of a carbon coating on the surface of the article. The conditions of this treatment are controlled to prevent soot deposition and according to whether the carbon deposition is to be in the pores or on the surface of the article. (D.L.C.)
