A process is given for making impermeable composite graphite tubes from porous component tubes. The process comprises treating at least one component tube to deposit carbon in the pores of the annular surface thereof, and uniting the treated tube with another component tube by a carbon bond so that the impermeable, treated surface does not form part of the exterior surface of the composite tube. The treatment may comprise heating in a nitrogen-benzene atmosphere at approximates 850 deg C and/or furfuryl alcohol impregnation, and a furfuryl alcohol adhesive may be used for making the carbon bond between the component tubes.
