CARBON ARTICLES

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4652035
A process for treating a porous carbon article is patented. The process increases the density of the article and may be used to treat some graphites with relatively large pores without the danger of the article bursting during the carbonizing process. The article is impregnated with furfuryl alcohol or with a mixture of furfuryl alcohol and a suspension of a finely divided carbon. The impregnant is hardened in the pores and then carbonized under nonoxidizing conditions. The article is then heated in a moving stream of a gaseous or vaporous carbon compound at a steady temperature between 500 and 1500 deg C. Temperature, pressure, and flow rate are carefully controlled to prevent the deposition of soot on the surface. (M.P.G.)
