A process is given for improving the impermeability of a porous carbon article. The process comprises impregnating the article, resinifying the impregnant in the pores, and carbonizing the impregnant by heating the articles under non-oxidizing conditions. The impregnant constitutes furfuryl alcohol with finely divided carbon as filler. Hollow or complex carbon articles may be treated by carrying out the process on one face and then repeating the process on the othei face. Several examples of the process are given. (D.L.C.)
