SEROTONIN AND THE LOCAL EFFECT OF X RAYS. 2. SEROTONIN AND THE EFFECTS OF X RAYS ON MITOSES IN THE HAIR FOLLICLE AND RADIOLOGIC ACANTHOSIS (in French)
Injection of serotonin intraperitoneally in guinea pigs 5 min before irradiation with 800 r signiflcantly inhibits the estrogen-stimulated mitosis in the nipples of male animals. " Application of 800 r to the fianks of guinea pigs evokes a transient epilation that can be completely prevented by 5min prior intraperitoneal injection of 15 mg serotonin creatinine sulfate. With 1600 r doses, transient epilation occurs if serotonin is given before irradiation, but if given after irradiation, loss of hair persists. Histologic study of these reactions in skin shows that when serotonin is given before, but not after, 1600- r irradiation, hair bulbs are protected from destruction and mitoses appear after irradiation. Serotonin also inhibited the marked acanthosis developing after irradiation. However, if it is given after irradiation, hair follicles are lost. nuclei become pyknotic, and acanthosis occurs as in irradiated controls. (H.H.D.)
