EFFECT OF RADIATIONS ON HEART LACTIC DEHYDROGENASE AND PANCREAS RIBONUCLEASE AND PROTECTIVE ACTION OF A SULFANILAMIDE DISULFIDE

Journal Article · · Biochim. et Biophys. Acta

Solutions of heart lactic dehydrogenase and pancreas RNAase were strikingly inactivated by treatment with ultraviolet, x- and gamma -radiations. A similar inactivation was obtniined by treating heart lactic dehydrogenase with chemically produced free radicals. A new disulfide compound, namely bis (2-amino- 4-sulfonamido-phenyl)disulfide, acted, when it was added to the enzymes in solution, as a protective agent both in irradiated enzymes and in those treated with free radicals. The evidence obtained points to the conclusion that the disulfide protects by trapping the inactivating free radicals produced by the radiation. (auth)
