Alloys were prepared in an arc furnace baving a nonconsumable tungsten electrode. The reaction between Ni/sub 3/Al and Ni/sub 3/Nb was followed by thermal and x-ray analyses, and by following the changes in hardness and electrical resistance as a function of composition. Microstructural analysis shows that the 10 to 40% Ni/sub 3/Nb alloys are homogeneous solid solutions similar to pure Ni/sub 3/Al. A eutectic forms at 70% Ni/sub 3/Nb. Confirmatory x-ray analyses showed only one phase with a Ni/sub 3/Al lattice at 0 to 40% Ni/ sub 3/Nb, and two phases (Ni/sub 3/Al and Ni/sub 3/Nb) for higher contents of Ni/ sub 3/Nb. The maximum hardness and electrical resistance occur at 40 to 50% Ni/ sub 3/Nb. The minimum values are observed for the pure intermetallic compounds Ni/sub 3/Al and Ni/sub 3/Nb. (TTT)
