One of the methods of overcoming the brittleness of an intermetallic is by addition of an alloying constituent. Small amounts of V, Nb, and Ta were added to FeAl/sub 3/ to improve its high heat strength. The alloying ingredients have a limited solubility in Fe/sub 3/Al (5 wt.% for vanadium, 2% for Nb, and 2% for Ta). The hardness of Fe/sub 3/Al increased with increasing content of V, Nb, or Ta, but the Ta alloys showed the highest hardness. The specific electrical resistance of Fe/sub 3/Al increased sharply with the addition of 1.0 wt.% of alloying component, and then increased slowly with a further increase in content of V, Nb, or Ta. Alloys quenched from 1200 deg C had a greater electrical resistance than the slowly-cooled alloys. The vanadium alloys had the highest electrical resistance. A study of the hot hardness of the alloys showed that the rate of decrease in heat strength of the alloy decreased with an increase in content of V, Nb,or Ta. An alloy containing 10 wt.% Ta (2.83 at.%) showed the highest hardness with the lowest rate of decrease in heat strength of the alloy. The same alloy also possessed the highest hardness over a temperature range of 20 to 800 deg C. (TTT)
