INVESTIGATIONS ON THE PROBLEM OF FORMATION AND PATHOPHYSIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF BIOGENIC AMINES IN SUBLETHAL RADIATION INJURIES. II. ANNUAL TECHNICAL REPORT, COVERING THE PERIOD FROM OCTOBER 1, 1960-SEPTEMBER 30, 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4817551

Investigations were carried out which furnished a specific proof of the radiation-induced formation of toxic substances. After a single short-timed total body irradiation of 400, 600, and 800 r a considerable increase of the excretion of 3-hydroxytyramine, 1-noradrenaline, adrenaline, tryptamine, 5- hydroxytryatamine, buiotenine, and histamine was observed in the urine of rats. It was also possible to prove an increase of the named aromatic amines in the blood of the irradiated rats. In a pathophysiological respect the observation of the timely correspondence between the abnormal occurrence of the biogenic amines and the development of the radiation syndrome was of a special importance. The amines found hitherto under these experimental conditions concern highly active compounds with an unusually wide spectrum of pharmacological and toxicological action. (auth)
