GAMMA RAY TRANSITIONS FROM EXCITED STATES OF S$sup 32$ (thesis)

The P/sulp 31/(p, gamma )S/sup 32/ reaction was studied at the 355 and 440 kev resonance levels using the State University of lowa 500 kev Cockcroft- Walton accelerator and thick targets of red amorphous phosphorus. Single crystal analysis techniques were used for the 355 kev resonance identifying strong gamma ray transitions from the 9.19 Mev excitation level to the giound state and a cascade to the 2.24 Mev first excited state. There were also indications of gamma rays having eneigies of approximately 5.87, 5.44, 4.01, 3.41, and 3.00 Mev but identification of these is not certain. Radiation in the 5 to 6 Mev range is interpreted to be a cascade to the 5.80 Mev level. At 440 kev single crystal and scintillation pair spectrometer analyses identified strong transitions fiom the 9.27 Mev excitation level to the ground state and branching in two different twofold cascades to the 2.24 Mev first excited state and the 4.47 Mev intermediate excited state respectively. The width of the 440 resonance level was also found to not exceed 10 kev. On the basis of these transitions and the known spins and parities of the ground and first excited states of S/sulp 32/ and the ground state of P/sup 31/, it is predicted that the 440 kev capture state has a spin and parity of 1/sup +/ and that the 355 kev capture state may have a spin and parity of 1/sup -/.
