Radioprotection of phage T2 and of the monocomplex E. coli B/T2 was studied. Phage T2 is protected by cysteamine under conditions that exclude indirect effect mechanisms. Although there is no oxygen effect on this virus observable by removing the gas by physical means, it is suggested that the protector cysteamine acts by reducing some oxidized groups of the phage. The monocomplex can be protected only during the first five minutes of the latent period. The late monocomplex and the capacity of E. coli B to reproduce T2 are not protected by cysteamine. To explain these resuIts it is assumed that the molecules involved in the capacity-inactivation by X-rays are in a reduced state, in contrast to the structures whose alteration is responsible for the killing of the bacteria.
