The photon-energy response of a gas-flow type proportional counter, such as the pulse height counter n the energy resolution was studied experimentally u ing a Sr/sup 90/Y/sup 90/ BETA -ray excited x-ray source. The plateau characteristics of the proportional counter showed that discrimination between alpha and BETA rays, or between x rays of different energies was practicable by adjusting the high voltage of the counter. The energy spectrum of the bremsstrahlung produced by Sr/sup 90/-Y/sup 90/ BETA ray was calculated by thr Wyard method and agreed with the data obtained by a NaI(T1) scintillation energy spectrometer. The energy resolution of the counter was inversely proportional to the square root of the x ray energy, and the resolution for the Cu K x ray (8.0 kev) and Ti K x-ray (4.5 kev) were about 20 and 40%, respectively.
