The number of x photons produced by BETA particles was determined. The intensity of the x rays with energy greater than 10 kev from a BETA -ray source, such as P/sup 32/, Sr/sup 90/-Y /sup 90/, or Tl/sup 204/ combined with a target of Al, Sr, or Pd was measured with a NaI(Tl) scintilIation spectrometer. Maximum yields were obtained by means of a thin front target and a sufficiently thick back target. Results obtained on the radiographic sensitivity of steel thicknesses of 10 to 30 mm with the Sr/sup 90/- Y/sup 90/ BETA -ray excited x ray source agreed with those obtained from the calculated values. The results also showed that the sensitivity depended on the detecting position of the sample and on its spread size vertical to the incident radiation. The sensitivity formula can also be applied to gamma -ray radiography using Eu/sup 155/, Tm/sup 155/, and Ir /sup 192/ as sources and Rumiantsevs' data. (OID)
