THE ANALYSIS OF INJURIES AND REPARATIVE PROCESSES IN THE EMBRYOGENESIS OF RATS AFTER X-RAY IRRADIATION (in Russian)

It was observed that the administration of a total, x-ray dose of 130 r to the fetus of a rat on the 10th day after conception led to an increase in the percent of anomalous embryos during the first 3 days after irradiation, but that there was a significant decrease in the number of anomalous embryos after this 3 day period due to the effectiveness of reparative processes. Since it is well known that x-rays suppress the mitotic activity of cells, a comparison was made of the change in percent mitoses of brain cell tissue of irradiated and normal embryos. The mitotic activity of a normal embryo decreases from 42.13% on the 11th day to 27.32% on the 17th day of development. An embryo irradiated on the 10th day after conception shows only 11.68% of the cell dividing on the 11th day after conception (one day after irradiation). The mitotic activity of the irradiated embryo cells then increases until it approaches the normal level of about 28% on the 14th day after conception. The restoration of mitotic activity is a strong indication of reparative processes occurring in the embryonic brain. The greater the damage observed after irradiation, the lower is the mitotic activity observed in the embryonic, brain cell tissue. (TTT)
