TOLERANCE OF ERYTHROCYTES IN POULTRY: INDUCTION AND SPECIFICITY

Chickens could be rendered immunologically tolerant to foreign cells (homologous and turkey erythrocytes) by a series of transfusions of x-irradiated foreign blood. Development of tolerance was evaluated by the rate of elimination of the Cr/sup 51/-labeled erythrocytes. Transfusions were begun in the embryo via chorioallantoic vein and continued in the newly hatched chick. Blood irradiated with 10,000 to 40,000 r induced tolerance, but with larger doses (100,000) tolerance was not conferred. Irradiation damaged the erythrocytes slightly but the degree of damage was not correlated with survival time of the transfused cells. The results show that irradiation of blood injures leukocytes more extensively than erythrocytes, since it was previously found that 10,000 r abolished the ability of blood to induce graft-versus-host reactions. Tolerance induced with irradiated blood is generally incomplete but may last indefinitely; however; tolerance acquired in this way is less stable and complete than tolerance acquired from nonirradiated, viable cells. On the other hand, viable cells provide a less sensitive test, since birds which tolerate skin homografts often rapidly eliminate erythrocytes from the same donor. (H.H.D.)
