THE EFFECT OF IONIZING RADIATION ON NUCLEAR AND ANUCLEAR ERYTHROCYTES

Journal Article · · Physiologia Bohemoslovaca (Czechoslovakia)

The effect of high doses of x radiation (40000 r) on human, rabbit, and rooster erythrocytes in vitro was studied. Immediately after irradiation of blood no change in plasma hemoglobin and osmotic resistance of the cells was observed. Irradiation had no significant effect on survival of Cr/sup 51/- labeled red cells irradiated in vitro and then reinjected. Only following 24-hr incubation of irradiated blood samples at body temperature did a rise in plasma hemoglobin content and a full in osmotic resistance occur in irradiated erythrocytes in comparison with controls. No marked differences between nuclear (avian) and anuclear (mammalian) erythrocytes were observed in these responses. The relatively little difference between reactions of mammalian and avian red cells may be explained by the fact that the former contain a nucleus that no longer divides. The cell also lacks the basophil cytoplasmic substance and a true nucleolus, and the nucleus has a mature chromatic structure. The effect of irradiation became apparent only after incubation at body temperature when physiological and metabolic functions were already impaired as the result of isolation even in nonirradiated red cells. It was concluded that avian and mammalian red cells are injured in vitro by intense irradiation but the injury is such that the biological value of the cells is not greatly affected. (TCO)
