AN ATTEMPT TO DETECT AND TITRATE ROUS SARCOMA VIRUS PRODUCING CELLS OF RAT TUMOUR XC ON THE CHORIOALLANTOIC MEMBRANE OF THE CHICK EMBRYO

The inoculation of a dose of x-irradiated (5,000 r) cells of tumor XC onto the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of chicken embryos showed that the propontion of virusproducing cells could not be reliably detected, even when a maximal dose of 3 x 10/sup 5/ cells was used, although a parallel test on chicks showed an activity comparable to that obtained previously with nonirradiated cells. The 7-day cultivntion of tumor XC in the CAM and tests for cell-free extracts in chicks did not result in the expected high production of Rous sarcoma virus (RSV). In both cases of virus detection systems, however, the production of RSV in the cells of rat tumor XC was demonstrated. (auth)
