An attempt is made to detect a blood factor which can interrupt or suppress proteolytic reactions in the organs of irradiated animals. White rats were given a gamma-ray dose of 800 r, the animals were killed on the seventh day after irradiation, and homogenized samples of the liver were prepared. Liver suspensions were made up in distilled water (series I, control), in the blood plasma of intact rabbits (series II), and in the blood plasma taken from rabbits at various intervals of time after being given a dose of 800 r of gamma rays. Controls in distilled water were run on series II and III. The amount of amino nitrogen, determined colorimetrically after incubation of the sample at 36 deg C for 6 hours, was taken as a measure of proteolytic activity. Intact rats showed 83 mg-% of amino nitrogen in the distilled water suspension with an increase to 325 mg-% after 6 hours incubation. The amount of amino nitrogen was 2l5 mg-% after 6 hours incubation on preparing the liver suspension in blood plasma. After irradiation the amounts of amino nitrogen in distilled water were 142 mg-% initially and 650 mg-% after 6 hours incubation, an increase of 100% over the controls. However, on suspending the irradiated homogenized liver in the blood plasma of intact rabbits (series II), the final amount of amlno nitrogen was abeut the same as that for the control. The intact plasma has an antiproteolytic effect. On suspending the irradiated homogenized liver ln the blood plasma of irradiated rabbits, there was a sharp increase in proteolytic activity. The antiproteolytlc factor is reestablished in the blood plasma of irradiated rabbits about 20 to 25 days after the irradiation. The antiproteolytic factor is destroyed by heating at 60 deg C for l5 minutes, but is stable for at least l4 days, when the blood plasma is stored at 4 deg C. (TTT)
