DETERMINATION OF DUSTINESS BY THE METHOD OF MEMBRANE FILTERS LABELED WITH RADIOACTIVE NICKEL

The preparation of membrane filters labeled with radioactive nickel is described. The red nickel salt of salicylhydrazone salicylaldehyde labeled with Ni/sup 63/ was prepared, the acetone solution of which was added to colloid solutions from which subsequently suitable membrane filters were prepared. Membrane filters thus prepared had an approximate activity of 0.05 mu c/cm/sup 2/ . The filters were used for retaining various types of industrial dusts and aerosols, in both laboratory experiments and field work. The amount of trapped samples of aerosols and dust particles was estimated by measuring the absorption of soft BETA irradiation of Ni/sup 63/. The lower range of sensitivity of the method was 0.2 mg/cm/sup 2/ and the range of practical application 0.2-2.0 mg/cm/ sup 2/. Based on the results, the methods and apparatus are recommended for rapid and automatic assessment of the concentration of dusts and aerosols. (APCA Abstr., 7: No. 10, March 1982)
