MEASUREMENTS OF THE PENETRATION DEPTH OF RADIOACTIVE-LABELED AEROSOLS IN FILTERS FOR SUSPENDED MATERIAL (in German)

Journal Article · · Staub (West Germany) Changed to Staub - Reinhalt. Luft

Direct measurements of the distribution of absorbed aerosols were made on various filter types. The atmospheric aerosols were labeled with ThB and the range and energy distribution of the alpha rays emitted from ThC' was measured. The method makes possible the investigation of the absorption in surface layers up to about 4 mg/cm/sup 2/ mass or about 100 mu m thickness and permits conclusions on the structure of these layers. Measurements of the penetration depth as a function of the flow velocity show that in membrane filters electrical charges formed in the flow-through have a considerable effect on the aerosol absorption.
